Prince of Orange is a title held by members of the Dutch Royal family. The current holder of the title is Prince Willem-Alexander, who became King of the Netherlands in 2013. The title originated in the Middle Ages, when the area of Orange in southern France was ruled by a powerful family. The title was later passed to the Dutch Royal Family through the marriage of William of Orange, the founder of the Dutch monarchy, to Mary Stuart in 1677. The Prince of Orange is the heir apparent to the Dutch throne and is traditionally invested with the Order of the Netherlands Lion at birth.
